hard to explain

I think I need to mentally prepare myself for how musically epic this weekend may/will be. Since I was sick last week and missed Noah and the Whale, I'm coming off of a bit of a live music drought and diving head first into two literally massive shows at Madison Square Garden.

First up is the Strokes' return to New York. It's amazing how excited I can get over a band whose particular brand of rock n' roll cool relies heavily on an air of apathy. Regardless of whatever problems they may have had putting together Angles, I still think it's a really solid record. The cover art is atrocious, and made me more prejudiced to think the album would be awful than any of their interviews about Julian only liking X% of the songs, etc. I've let it seep in over the course of 2 weeks and several plays, and it has really grown on me. I really do hope they get over whatever creative process problems they had, and continue to put out more music.

The last time I saw them was my junior year, playing on campus. It was absurdly exciting, to say the least.

Speaking of the Aragon, I can't help but feel a little old, because the first time I saw the Strokes there was also my first real concert. One of my favorite pictures is from that night - we look so young! I found a review of that show elsewhere online, and it's like a weird time warp: they didn't even have enough songs to do an encore! And tonight they play to a sold-out Madison Square Garden. So people can say whatever they want about the Strokes, but they'll always be one of the most seminal bands in my rotation.

sick days

I have consumed a gross amount of Netflix/Hulu/YouTube this week (as well as soup, ginger tea and dayquil) all as part of a massive effort to not be sick anymore! My first real fever-y sick day came at a very inopportune moment, as it meant that I had to skip the Noah & the Whale concert that I had been looking forward to for months :'( From the looks of things, it seems like it was a great show. What a shame. However, I'm feeling a lot better now, and thought I'd share a little audio-visual mix.

It all started off with the debut of the new video for the tUnE-yArDs song "Bizness", which heavily features a group of children:

Leading me to end up watching all these other similarly awesome videos that for a variety of reasons also cast kids in them:

don't try to hide it fight it

(image via 20x200)

My little musical heart has been overwhelmed in the last few days. Two great album releases today (The Dodos and Noah & the Whale), full streaming of the new Strokes album, and a really beautiful song from The National.

No Color (Amazon MP3 Exclusive)
No Color is only $2.99 today on Amazon! A serious serious steal. It has ass-kicking drums, vocals from Neko Case, and is overall a really solid album. If I could put stars next to the songs that I'm seriously in love with, you'd pretty much have to listen to the whole thing.

Last Night On Earth
Last Night On Earth is more cheerful than The First Days of Spring was (thank goodness), but it still offers the same type of lyrical narrative that can be universally understood. I'm really looking forward to their show next week.  So far I'm really attached to "L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.", "Just Me Before We Met" and "The Line."

The newest song from The National is for a new Paul Giamatti movie, Win Win.

work it night by night

I'm in the middle of a concert dry spell right now - the last show I saw was at the beginning of February! I have no tickets coming up until the 22nd (Noah and the Whale), followed by the holy grail of weekends at (unfortunately) Madison Square Garden: The Strokes and then the farewell show of LCD Soundsystem.  (Yes, I am one of those non-scalpers that managed to get tickets, though I'm not even sitting in the same section as the person I'm going with...)

I'm taking this moment to flash backwards to the last show, over a month ago: Chromeo at Terminal 5.
Those guys really know how to throw a party. Some (/a lot) of the people around us were obnoxiously bro-y, but they were weeded out slowly throughout the set, and we had a great time!  The first opener was a Japanese band (not entirely my thing), and the second opener was MNDR. She has a really great light show to go with her set, making things more dynamic to fill a space like T5 which otherwise could have seemed overwhelming for one girl on stage and her set of equipment.

Chromeo!

The Suzan

MNDR - every shot was blurry because of the constantly-changing lights.

In the meantime, I've filled my time with old/new shows (Party Down, Bored to Death, Portlandia), streams of albums coming out next week (Dodos!), and even starting some sewing projects for spring/summer.

this post is the new black

While February is always the shortest month, it feels like it is coming to an end even more quickly than usual.  It feels like just the other day that I went to see Chromeo and then to "My So-Called Prom" - but I haven't even uploaded those photos onto my computer yet!  I realized how tragically behind I was because the Oscars are coming up on Sunday, and I'm pretty close to having seen all the major contenders (as opposed to last year, when the only one of the 10 best picture nominees I had seen pre-show was Up.)

Tonight I'm going to (finally) see Black Swan- I'm excited to see the costumes most of all!

To play catch-up a bit, here are some other things I've been into this month:

Happy Valentine's Day!

Things I love today:

Over the weekend my mom was here - we saw IphigĂ©nie en Tauride at the Met Opera with Placido Domingo.  Also ate at one of my favorites, and bought a sweet new wallet that actually fits all my crap.  Win!

I know someone who hopes this is literal:

Ken wishes you all a Happy Chinese New Year!
